Campaign To Commemorate Brent In Bacup

A group of Facebook users has started a unique campaign to commemorate the work that Brent Peters (pictured above) has done for the town of Bacup.

The group, which now has around 150 members, is campaigning to have the Bacup Borough boss remembered for ever - by building a statue of him in the centre of the town.

The introduction on the Facebook page reads:

Please join our campaign to get a local legend what he deserves; a statue of himself on the roundabout instead of that stupid Fountain.

Brent is Mr Bacup Borough FC, not only does he manage the team, he grafts behind the scenes doing various menial jobs like cleaning the bogs, scrubbing the showers, running the bar, gritting Cowtoot Lane in the winter and being general Mr Dogsbody.

Andy Atkin, one of the founder members of the campaign, told the Lancashire Telegraph: "There are so many people who appreciate what Brent has done for the club including former players Danny Hartley and Chris Greenwood, who both hold Brent in high regard.

"We were watching the Manchester United game on Sunday and thought it would be a great idea to get a statue of Brent up.

As for Brent himself, he only became aware that the campaign had begun when he walked into the club's Sports Bar on Sunday evening.

"One of the girls, Amy O'Connor, said to me "Brent, come and look at what has been set up on Facebook".  To be fair I have been known to be the king of wind up's and I have always said it would take a good person to catch me out, so my initial reaction was that it was someone trying to take the pilsner.  But then Amy told me it was not, and that the group were deadly serious in their campaign.

"I have found this to be quite humbling and an honour that people can think of me this way and respect what I have done, and will continue to do, for the community of Bacup.

"My plans are only just starting.  The lease issue on the ground is almost resolved, and this will then hopefully lead to the Development of the Sophie Lancaster Stand and a Third Generation Playing Surface which will then allow us to open up the Stadium for Community use.

"When this work is complete, I may only then begin to feel a statue would be well deserved."

Facebook users who want to join the campaign can find the campaign page by typing "Brent Peters" into the search box on Facebook.
