The Hillmen put in a solid performance in their final run-out of the pre-season programme, coming from behind to secure a 1-1 draw.
Marine shaded the first half. They put the Glossop North End defence, missing some regulars from previous games, under heavy pressure. However, despite forcing a seemingly countless number of corners the back line stood firm, including a spectacular acrobatic over-head clearance off the goal-line from Mark Haslam.
Marine took the lead in the 64th minute when James Short put in a cross from the left flank. The ball took a looping trajectory and sailed over the head of Paul Phillips, hit the far post, and dropped into the net.
This spurred on the Hillmen side, still featuring a number of ‘A Trialist’ players. Some of those did themselves no harm in the game, but it was the already signed on Jude Oyibo who grabbed the 70th minute leveller. A loose ball dropped to him in the box and Oyibo controlled the ball, made space for himself and fired his shot across the keeper into the corner of the net.
From there Glossop North End looked the side most likely to win it, but couldn’t quite turn pressure into chances. Management duo Paul Phillips and Steve Halford will have been pleased with the showing against a team from a division higher though, and some players got their first 90 minutes of the season under their belts.
Next week the real action starts. The Evo-Stik North season kicks off with a trip to Goole and we cannot wait!
