Peter has had a decades-long association with the club – he was appointed as Secretary in 1979! – and in rightful recognition of his long service will become a Vice President of the club. Of course you’ll be seeing him at almost every game as usual, with the only difference being that he will have a little less to worry about!

Club Chairman Dave Atkinson was full of praise for Peter. “It’s quite simple really,” he said, “without Peter and Peter Higginbottom from Davies Blank Furness we wouldn’t have a club. The work that the two of them did together in the clubs darkest hours means that Surrey Street is still a football ground rather than a warehouse because ,but for their efforts, we wouldn’t have been here. He’s seen the club through thick and thin, and much of it thin, I have nothing but admiration for him.”

“Peter is a one-in-a-million person for a club. He’s done pretty much every job here, including washing the kit and even picking the team. He is so meticulous; I think he still has all the players’ details on file somewhere – every one who has signed for us in the time he’s been secretary.”

“Although he’s stepping down from the Secretary role, I’m pleased that he will still be around to offer his advice to us because I’m sure we’ll need it. To do a very time-consuming job for the club whilst working full time has been extraordinary, and he’s built up a wealth of knowledge in that time.”

Following on from Peter stepping down, we are delighted that Lesley O’Donnell will be succeeding Peter in taking on the full secretary’s role, including a seat on the board of directors.

Later in the week we’ll be hearing from Peter when he talks to the GNE website and take us through the best, and maybe the worst, of his memories.
For now though all that remains is for us to thank Peter for the years of dedication he has given to the club. To give the kind of voluntary time to a club that he has is a huge commitment, and all we can say is that we are extremely grateful to Peter for giving us his thousands of hours over those 38 years.

For the next 5 Saturdays the Surrey Street ground will be open from 1pm-4pm to allow a number of maintenance jobs to be carried out. These jobs include;

Repairs to the boundary wall
General gardening type activities
Numerous painting jobs, inside and outside
Reinstallation of the pitch perimeter fence panels
Reinstallation of netting

If anyone has an hour or two to spare on Saturday afternoons and would like to help out, please drop in. All help will be gratefully received.

Glossop North End supporters will get a chance to meet their new management team of Paul Phillips and Steve Halford on Sunday 9th July.

The meeting will be held in the GNE clubhouse at 2pm and will be open to all supporters.

More details will be announced nearer the time.

Striker Kyle Riley is the latest name to commit himself to The Hillmen, and we are delighted to greet him back at Surrey Street.

A strong striker, you’ll recall that Kyle, 23, was part of Chris Willcock’s GNE squad in the 2013-14 season.  He then moved on to Winsford Town, for whom he became captain and scored 23 goals in 2016-17.

Kyle joins Jay Gorton, Liam Brownhill, Chris Baguley and Alex Honeyball as the announced players in the squad for 2017-18.  Pre-season approaches and we’re excited to get started.

Alex has been a scholar at Bolton Wanderers, where he was captain of the Under-23 side, but following his release from the Macron this summer we are absolutely delighted that he has committed to The Hillmen.

A tall centre half, Alex played for Paul Phillips and Steve Halford in a loan spell at Stalybridge Celtic last season.  He is strong in the air, smart with a pass and covers the ground quickly, and we cannot wait to see him in action!

Chris, 29, came through the youth and reserve ranks at Oldham Athletic and has represented England at u-19 and u-20 levels. He has a wealth of experience having previously played for, amongst others, FC United, Salford City and Ashton United.

Chris is another top quality addition to the squad and we can’t wait to see him in action.

Liam, 30, brings with him a wealth of experience, including at international level.  When playing at Witton Albion he was selected for the England C squad – a team made up of the best non-league players in the UK.

He joins us from Trafford FC and his former clubs include FC United of Manchester, Ashton United, Chester, Droylsden, Altrincham and Bangor City, having started his career at Stockport County.

We look forward to seeing Liam pull on the blue shirt.  Welcome to Surrey Street!

He played for Glossop Juniors as a boy and made his first team debut under Chris Nicholson in around 2005.  He stayed with the Hillmen until 2012, including playing at Wembley in 2009, and culminating in sweeping the board at the Player of the Year awards in his last season with us.

After leaving GNE he moved on to Mossley, Ashton United, and most recently Stalybridge Celtic, playing under Steve Halford at all three clubs, and Paul Phillips at the latter two.

If you haven’t worked it out yet, we’d be surprised, but we are absolutely chuffed to be able to welcome back Jason Gorton.

Jason has committed to the Hillmen for the 2017-18 season after the stars aligned,  a management team he enjoys playing for joining the club he always told us he’d play for again.

We can’t wait for the new season to get started.  And if we know Jay like we think we do, neither can he!  We are really looking forward to welcoming him and his family back to Surrey Street.

Guys & Girls,

I don’t think I can leave without thanking each and everyone of you for the welcome you gave me when I joined the club. My time at Glossop has been short and sweet but I have enjoyed every minute (apart from Prescott & Lancaster).

I’ve no doubt in my mind that the new management team will be a huge success at Surrey Street, and I would of loved to of played under them however I can’t turn down an offer by a club that’s just slightly closer to my heart….
