Another Saturday, another qualification for a cup final, as North End qualified for the Men United Cup – the NWCFL’s league cup – for the first time in their history, despite trying since 1982.

Glossop face a punishing run of games in the next few weeks – they must play Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturdays this week – following the NWCFL decision to refuse and extension to the season. As a result they were in a hurry to complete this tie ASAP, and they very nearly succeeded.

The opening goal came in the 8th minute when Dave Young curled a low free kick from the left corner of the box into the right corner of the net, his 13th goal of a prolific season.

North End were running Bootle ragged with their pace and crisp passing and Michael Bowler’s interplay with Lee Blackshaw nearly led to a goal with Jack Mano saving at the near post.

The second goal came on 20 minutes when Jason Carey put in a sumptuous cross from the right that landed at the feet of Tom Bailey, 6 yards out, and he finished coolly.

The game should have been sealed two minutes later when a defender went through the back of Carey, who was trying to latch onto a clearance from Blackshaw’s parried shot. However, the penalty, which Carey took himself, was slow and central and Mano saved comfortably.

Bootle had played shell-shocked, and perhaps Tom Peterson was suffering on 25 minutes when set up by an O’Connor flick on, because he should have pulled on back, but screwed wide from 6 yards.

Meanwhile, Glossop continued to press and Blackshaw’s cross was heading to the top corner until curling OFF the line, and the same player was just denied by the onrushing Mano has he tried to nick the ball around him. As the half came to an end, Carey netted with a header but was pulled up for climbing.

The second half saw Glossop try to conserve energy and take their foot off the gas and it nearly cost them. In truth there was little action in either goalmouth, but tricky winger Kieran Halligan was coming more to the fore for the visitors.

The worrying moments didn’t come until 9 minutes from the end when Martin Parker was a little clumsy at a free kick and brought down Jamie Hay. Peterson netted the penalty and the game could have been on.

However it was Glossop who had the better chances towards the end, Kieran Lugsden denied twice by Mano. It didn’t mean that the home side weren’t delighted to hear the final whistle though, and they could celebrate reaching the 30th April final, likely to be played at the home of Curzon Ashton.

North End progressed to the semi-finals of the NWCFL’s league cup in a relatively comfortable manner, beating Gate thanks to goals from Sam Grimshaw and two more from Jason Carey.

Match Report: Jonathan Haggart

It took them ten minutes to warm up, but once North End got going it looked just a matter of whether they could find a thread to open up a committed Squires Gate defence.

That rear-guard nearly held out until half time.  Goalkeeper Ben Fletcher made a great low save from Tom Bailey’s swivelled shot from the edge of the area again repeated the trick to Dave Young’s low drive.  Carey and Grimshaw tried from distance, one wide and the other again saved by Fletcher.

Then Gate nearly pinched a lead when Harry Dunn advanced into the box and passed the pass across the face of goal.  It just needed a touch into the net from a striker, but all were just too out of reach to apply it.

The opener finally came in the 43rd minute.  Carey picked up a loose ball in midfield and slipped the ball to Sam Grimshaw.  Some 35 yards from goal, and at the left corner of the box, Grimshaw’s pace took him to the edge of the area by the ‘D’. Everyone expected a pass as defenders converged, but Grimshaw just picked his spot inside the post and placed the ball there.  1-0

After the break Jason Carey quickly doubled the score.  A corner was cleared to Eddie Moran, who put the ball back into the box on the corner of the 6 yard area.  Kelvin Lugsden picked it up, twisted and crossed where Carey just had to turn it in, and did so.

The 3rd goal was also Carey’s time from the spot.  Another Grimshaw burst took him into the box, and Penswick slid in and brought him down.  With the ball running away from the Glossop man the red card for Penswick seemed harsh, but nevertheless, Carey booted the ball home to boost his tally for the season.  He is keen to score as many as possible in case the 6 goals he has netted against Stockport Sports this season are wiped from the record, as that team faces an EGM which may see them be expelled from the league.

North End created further chances, Kieran Lugsden going close twice, Moran and Hind once, but in fairness to the visitors they never gave up.  Despite creating little throughout, they still had the last shot on goal, but Murphy’s free kick was over the bar.

The draw for the semi-finals is due to take place on Wednesday evening.

The Hillmen emphatically swept into the quarter finals of the MEN United league cup with a crushing victory over Widnes, ruthlessly emphasising the difference in quality between the top of the Premier League and the middle of the First Division.

North End were always on the front foot, and spurned good opportunities early on.  Tom Bailey in particular wasted a fine chance when choosing to place a shot past a stranded keeper rather than blast it.  A defender blocked it and then also got his body in front of Bailey’s follow up.

However they took the lead in the 21st minute when Blackshaw’s ball over the right back saw Jason Carey through on the angle.  His first touch was sublime, cushioning it into his path in a manner that meant he didn’t have to break stride as he advanced into the box and slipped the ball past the keeper.

The second came on 28 minutes when Blackshaw advanced into the box on the right.  His shot was blocked only sufficiently to see it loop up and hit the back of the net.  Seven minutes later Carey notched again, beating an offside trap to pick up a pass on the penalty spot and despatch the finish.

Carey sought a first half hat trick, but the keepers’ legs denied him just before the break.  The fourth goal came in the 58th minute, as substitute Sam Hind played the ball wide to Eddie Moran, and his driven cross along the 6-yard line was turned home by Blackshaw.

Ben Richardson added the 5th on 70 minutes, stealing in unmarked at the back post to meet Lee Morris’ deep deep cross, and he had the simplest of tap-ins.
The 6th, however, was far from simple and worth the entrance money alone.  Blackshaw picked up the ball midway in the Widnes half and set off on a run that saw him dribble past three players into the box, draw the keeper and dink it over his body into the net.  What a way to complete a hat-trick!

Number seven came in the 78th minute, and again it was Blackshaw applying the finish to Hind’s pinpoint pass across the box and then Morris added the 8th on the stroke of full time when Morris dribbled in from the left and shot.  His effort was blocked, but rebounded to his feet, giving him chance to side-step his man and fire home from the edge of the box.

It completed a resounding win – Glossop North End’s second 8-0 win of the year astoundingly – and the Hillmen will now face Squires Gate in the quarter finals in February.   Meanwhile, the race is on to score 100 goals for the season; they are currently up to 95, which considering it is not yet Christmas is an incredible total.

North End progressed into the 3rd round of the MEN United Cup – the NWCFL league cup – but only by the skin of their teeth as the visitors fought for their lives, sometimes too aggressively, to blunt the Glossop attack. It took a very late leveller to prevent the home side losing at the first attempt in this trophy for the 4th consecutive year.

The visitors approach was clear. They would look to disrupt the North End play whilst hoping to create something on the break. Their disruption was over the top on many occasions, with Lee Blackshaw in particular coming in for early punishment, taking heavy fouls three times.

The referee tried to give players their chances, and was reluctant to show the yellow card, as is in-keeping with football at this level, but Blackshaw in particular could have done with the protection a yellow card might have afforded him.

As a result, the game was not a classic. AFC thought they had a strong shout for a penalty early on, which was waved away by the referee, but neither keeper had a shot to save. For North End both Jason Carey shot wide with a swivelled shot when he perhaps had more time to compose a shot than he thought.

AFC took a shock lead on 55 minutes when Grant Dell pinched the ball in midfield and advanced to the edge of the area. Rather than pass to his partner he lashed a firm shot into the top corner, to silence the North End crowd – a great finish.

Glossop pressed but struggled to find an effort that forced Adam Caunce into a save. Martin Parker shot over from distance and had a header from a corner cleared off the line but it took until the last 10 minutes for Caunce to be truly tested when Dave Young advanced into the area. He shot across the face of goal, but the keeper dived full length to push the ball away and either by luck or judgement away from the 3 advancing GNE strikers.

There was a crazy goalmouth scramble with time ticking away when Young, Blackshaw and Mack had shots blocked in succession, as a determined Blackpool defence stood firm. By now they were down to 10 men after Betteridge received a second yellow card for his part in a bout of wrestling with Lugsden.

As time ticked away, in the 88th minute, Emini Adegbenro forced the vital breakthrough. He got to the by-line and crossed low. Ford sliced his clearance against the bar, it bounced onto Caunce and into the net.

Ford took issue with some unnecessary unsporting comment towards him as he lay disappointed on the floor but should have been sent off for throwing punches as he sought retribution. However the referee settled for talking to both captains as we went into extra time.

Extra time was quieter on that score, and for 15 minute there was little goalmouth incident either, but in the second period GNE went for a winner, with Bailey shooting over the bar, Adegbenro’s wicked cross just lacking a touch and Young driving just too high. Penalties it was.

Greg Hall set the standard by saving the first spot kick for the Hillmen, and with Young, Bailey & Mack all netting when Hall saved AFC’s 4th penalty Blackshaw had a chance to win it. However, Caunce saved, but no matter, Hall saved the 5th kick to give North End a place in Round 3, and a home tie with Widnes FC.
