NWCFL Premier Division newcomers West Didsbury and Chorlton came to Surrey Street on Tuesday for their first ever visit having so far failed to register a League point this season but bolstered by a win in the FA Cup against Abbey Hey on Saturday. West were shorn of a number of first team regulars due to injuries and work commitments whereas the Hillmen were fielding a largely unchanged side.

The FA Cup starts early in the season for clubs on the lower slopes of the football pyramid and, just two weeks into the new season, Glossop North End found themselves facing the relatively unknown in the shape of Northern Counties East Division 1 side Armthorpe Welfare. This was the first encounter between the two clubs and is a function of Glossop being part of Derbyshire and tending to attract sides from the NCEL in the early rounds of both the FA Cup and the FA Vase. This is much to the delight of the GNE travelling support who like nothing better than to venture into pastures new.

The Surrey Street regulars can’t really work out what is happening to their team this season. With a complete change in the management and more new players than old, the results are looking to be depressingly similar to last season. A win away at Winsford United is the only positive in the results column with the other League matches so far this season all having been lost by the odd goal. However, the standard of football is high, the work through midfield has been generally slick and precise, the defence looks solid and well organised, the work ethic is good, the spirits are buoyant but, despite the efforts of the returning Tom Bailey, goals are sadly lacking.

This early season encounter between two of the teams described by many as contenders for the NWCFL this season went the way of the home team but it was a close run thing. Linnets came into the match on the back of two good wins and for GNE it was an opportunity to consolidate on a good midweek performance away at Winsford United.

Somewhat contrasting fortunes had favoured these sides in the first matches of the new season last Saturday. Winsford had recorded a fine 3-1 away win at Wigan Robin Park whereas the Hillmen were the wrong end of a 2-1 scoreline at home to Ashton Athletic. Expectations amongst a healthy mid-week crowd were high as the home side looked to consolidate that first win and the visitors in need of a change of fortune.
