Having found their shooting boots in their 7-0 over Maltby Main at the weekend, Glossop North End had them out again on Tuesday night…but only after a goal less first half that saw the weekend’s hat-trick hero, Dave Young, miss from the spot
Glossop North End 4 Alsager Town 0
NWCFL Premier Division
Match Report: Jonathan Haggart
That came in the 25th minute after what looked a harsh penalty award for a handball. The ball had been hit at high velocity from short-ish range at Reiss Lee and he didn’t have any opportunity to move his hands away. Alsager will have believed that former Hillman Steve Dryden’s save was an element of justice, particularly when the follow up was poked wide.
In the first half Glossop had created the majority of chances, but Alsager had had their moments too. Whilst Jason Carey had curled a shot wide and Dryden was quick off the line to deny Carey again when the striker was clean through, Wintle had shot just over for the visitors and Blundell forced Hall into a diving save.
However, after the break North End upped their game and Alsager had no answer. Glossop scored and early goal and Alsager simply collapsed.
The opener came on 49 minutes when Tom Bailey won the ball on the right and fed a pass through the defence for Eddie Moran. His neat pass found Carey at the edge of the box, and Carey switched the ball from one foot to the other and placed a shot past the keeper.
Hind headed over and Carey shot similarly as North End looked to seal the game, which finally did in the 71st minute. Adam Kay got behind the defence but his cross looked to be behind the forward line and the chance gone. However, Steve Yarwood managed to stretch back and hook a low shot into the net, his first goal for the club with his first touch of the ball after coming on a sub.
Two minutes later it was three. Again it was a lovely pass behind the back four that opened Alsager up, and Kieran Lugsden shot first time. Dryden pulled off a terrific save, but parried it towards the penalty spot where Bailey was lurking and headed home.
Kay himself finished the second half rout with 4 minutes to go when taking advantage of a slip at left back, advancing just into the area and larruping the ball into the net with this left foot.
The result certainly whets the appetite for Saturday’s game at home to Runcorn Linnets. North End are second and unbeaten, whilst Linnets have won every league game they’ve played. It has the potential to be an absolute cracker.
