Glossop’s promotion at the end of last season to the Evo-Stik league opened up a number of derby fixtures and Droylsden was a match on paper that whetted several appetites and this game was to be no exception.
Despite the close proximity of the two clubs, they have only met a handful of times in competitive fixtures, the last time being back in 2010 in the Manchester Cup Semi-Final.
Before kick off, a minutes silence for the victims of the Shoreham air crash was impeccably observed by players and spectators.
The game kicked off and it was Glossop who were fast out of the blocks. An early attempt by Rainford went wide, but it wasn’t long before he beat the keeper at his near post to open the scoring for Glossop.
Dan White was replaced by Jason Carey after taking a knock early on in the first half. Carey looked sharp from the off and found himself on the end of a Williams cross to head the ball home after 18 minutes.
The game settled down, with Droylsden starting to find their feet and making the midfield a more competitive area. Daniel Douglas-Pringle’s pace was making space on the left wing, but Eddie Moran was up to the challenge, steadily thwarting the attacks.
A free kick outside the Glossop box was struck sweetly by Matt Burke forcing a great save by Grey Hall to stop it going in the top corner much to the applause of the home fans who were in fine voice.
The second half was a scrappy affair with both teams not quite finding the fluidity of the first half; this was however interjected by a free kick from Williams which put Rainford through on goal. Beating the offside trap, Rainford coolly put it past the keeper to put Glossop North End three nil up.
A Kieran Lugsden shot from outside the box whistled over the bar but it wasn’t long before Glossop further extended their lead by a headed goal from Dave Young shortly after.
85 minutes gone and Jason Carey’s tricky footwork put Stott through for Glossop’s fifth of the night much to the dismay of the Droylsden defence.
Just when you thought the game was over, Stott was brought down as the last man by Joe Cooper. Cooper took an early bath, leaving Young to convert from the penalty spot.
Nobody would have predicted this result, but Glossop were ruthless on the night. The Hillmen made the best of their chances whilst exploiting Droylsden’s fragilities at the back.
The return fixture is on another Tuesday night, this time Tuesday 20th October.
