Bank Holiday derbies are supposed to be feisty affairs as the form book is torn up, however this game failed to spark in the way it should quite simply because Glossop North End were so dominant from start to finish. New Mills are pointless and North End are unbeaten, and the gap between the sides was obvious from the start, with the Hillmen barely having to move up the gears after an early salvo.
New Mills 0, Glossop North End 3
Evo-Stik First Division North
Monday 31st August 2015
The opening goal came in the 4th minute when the ball was worked down the left and Ashley Stott worked along the by-line. His cross looped up off a defender over the keeper and to the far post, where Astley Mulholland had the simplest of chances to tap home.
In the 8th minute North End doubled the lead. This time it came down the right side when Kieran Lugsden chased a ball over the full back. Boic Nhllziyah was first to the ball but attempted a suicidal back pass to the keeper. Jamie Rainford was lurking and nipped in to pinch the ball, round Liam Higginbotham, and stroke the ball into the empty net.
At that point it seemed a question of ‘how many?’. Mullholland got underneath a Russell cross and headed over, Stott shot from 25 yards but it was comfortably saved, Dave Young headed a corner over the bar and Kieran Lugsden headed wide.
New Mills were trying, but were limited to speculative efforts on the rare occasions they did foray into the Glossop North End half with Matt Sherlock and Brandon Windsor both shooting from distance without the net being troubled seriously.
Stott came closest to scoring for North End before half time after a lovely build up involving flicked passes from Lugsden and Rainford, however Stott’s placed shot from the edge of the area was just over the angle.
Rainford swept and early second half shot wide but made no mistake on 57 minutes. This time he received the ball 25 yards out and turned well to advance on goal. Danny White was overlapping and a pass to the unmarked midfielder looked the most likely option, but confident Rainford looked up and curled a passed shot into the net from the edge of the area to continue his fine run of form.
Jack Beswick tried to rally for the home side, cutting in and shooting from the edge of the area, but the ball went over the bar. He was back in action again shortly afterwards, this time clearing Dave Young’s goal-bound header off the line. In between Jason Carey had had a goal chalked off for offside and seemed certain to score from a low cross only to hit his own man with his shot.
In the end, 3-0 was enough for the Hillmen. They had not expended too much energy, and will go into Saturday’s game with Witton Albion at Surrey Street in good heart.
