Glossop Denied By Last Minute Goal
Match Report by Nick Tansley
Glossop’s Evostick adventure continued with a visit from Ossett Albion. A bumper crowd of over 400 braved the atrocious weather to see if Glossop could get back to winning ways after defeat to Marine in the Integro Doodson League Cup. There was an immaculately observed minutes silence prior to the game in memory of those who lost their lives in the Paris tragedy of the night before, perspective at its most brutal.
Glossop started kicking to the chimney end on a pitch rapidly turning from slick to heavy. Early pressure failed to yield a goal as neat interplay between Mulholland and Bowler lead to a pull back cross which evaded the oncoming Glossop forwards. Bowlers’ powerful running and desire to get down the right wing lead to the first booking of the game after 7 minutes (Muller) and the signs were that it was just a matter of time before a goal came.
Another Ossett booking in the 14th Minute (Paylor) followed as a cross from Mulholland narrowly evaded Rainford, Glossop’s danger man.
After the 20 minute mark Ossett began to come into the game. A corner was driven across the area and took a deflection off a Glossop head causing Greg Hall to dive full length to his right hand side to tip the ball round the post. This was followed by another two corners to Ossett as they built the pressure on the Glossop back four.
The midfield battle was to the fore as another Ossett player was booked (Clarisse) while Mulholland was still the main threat for Glossop.
The sucker punch came after captain Dave Young made a last ditch challenge on the edge of the box giving Ossett a free kick on the left hand side of the box. The excellent Rob Boardman took the free kick right footed across the face of the wall and past Greg Halls despairing dive into the bottom left corner of the net. Half time and Glossop went in a goal down.
The first 10 minutes of the second half showed Rob Boardman at his best. Good interplay with Brunt followed by a shot saved well by Hall was just a precursor of what was to come. On 53 minutes Boardman broke down the right wing and pulled a low cross into the path of Matthews who passed the ball into the bottom corner of the goal leaving Glossop with a mountain to climb.
The game appeared to be drifting away from Glossop until the 75th minute when a short corner lead to Josh Brizell driving the ball into the net and the game was on.
Straight from the kick off Mulholland ran at the Ossett defence who appeared to be half asleep after the goal and the resulting chance was rammed home for his first Glossop goal by Chris McDonagh. The crowd erupted and the feeling was another great comeback was on the card.
The sting in the tail was provided in the 89th minute by Man of the Match Rob Boardman. He controlled a high ball on the touchline on the right had side of the box before dancing between two defenders and slamming the ball past Hall into the roof of the net. A goal worthy of winning any game, and so it proved.
