North End Cough Up Points to Linnets

Despite having the bulk of possession and putting the visitors under severe pressure at times, the resilient visitors managed to create moment that mattered when they scored in the 71st minute. It wasn’t a smash and grab, because both sides contributed to an excellent game in atrocious conditions, however the Hillmen will certainly feel hard done by having failed to take a chance.

Calvin Hare in the Burscough goal certainly contributed towards that. Glossop started quickly and in the first minute Hare saved Lugsden’s point blank header at the near post and when the follow up dropped to Tom Bailey, his swivelled shot was header over the bar.

There were two efforts on 5 minutes when firstly Bailey’s shot from the edge of the box was defected wide, and shortly afterwards when Astley Mulholland skipped into the box and dinked a cross to the near post, Hare pulled off a brilliant save from Bailey’s header.

Glossop keeper Lewis King showed his skills too when Will Jones found himself behind the back four from a long goal kick that was flicked on. Suddenly he had a yard of space in the box, but King was off his line very quickly to block the shot.

As half time approached, Bailey flashed a shot just wide, Burscough’s Jon Conway shot wide too, but then Mulholland saw a great chance blocked, and then the follow up went the wrong side of the post.

In the second half, Glossop North End were again quick off the mark when Mulholland beat the full back for pace and put in a great cross that was headed out to Joe Shaw, whose shot was pushed behind by Hare. Burscough were also probing though, and Smart’s 30 yard rocket just dipped over the bar.

Jason Carey came on for his first appearance since returning to the club, but just couldn’t stretch far enough behind his body to flick in a Bailey cross along the 6 yard line, but then Burscough got their winner.

The visitors worked the ball on the left side nicely, before eventually feeding the ball into the box. Connolly got to the by-line and put in a low cross along the line for Jones to tap in.

It was a blow from which Glossop struggled to recover and they failed to create a chance of note from that point. The hammer blow took the wind from their sails, and they will need to gather themselves and go again when they travel to Mossley on Boxing Day. They can take heart from the fact that for most of the game they played well on this day, but were beaten by a side on an excellent run.
