Glossop North End continued their 100% start to the season on Tuesday with a battling win at Ashton Athletic.
Ashton adapted to the difficult conditions quicker, and might have taken the lead in the early minutes but for Greg Hall‘s goalkeeping and Matt Russell‘s tackle, thwarting a one-on-one.
They home side continued to press and make chances, so it was against the run of play when Glossop took the lead on 25 minutes. The ball was worked left to Steve Yarwood and his pinpoint cross found Jason Carey, who made no mistake, nodding home from 6 yards.
This settled Glossop, and they might have doubled their league on the stroke of half time, but Dave Young‘s penalty, awarded after Carey was barged over, was saved by the keeper.
However, early in the second half the lead was doubled when Neil Chappell popped up in the area to convert a low cross from short range.
Ashton pulled one back when Russell hauled down his opponent in the area and Ryan Small reduced the deficit from the spot, but tenacity in defence, some fine keep-ball play and an incredible point-blank save at the death, a fierce drive blocked by the face of Hall, secured another win for North End and make it 12 point from 12.
